reader feedback.
I truly appreciate all of the
feedback I receive from you, my
readers, as it shows that these articles don't just disappear into space after I publish them, and that really boosts my spirits!
Reader feedback on this mattress has been very positive, with folks saying it
does the job at a reasonable price.
And in launching this blog (something I had NEVER
done before), I knew in my mind I was filling an unmet need for
readers, but to actually get
reader feedback has made it real and more fulfilling.
It
does not even have to consider which words the text contains, but can rely solely on the
feedback from the
reader's gaze.
Several
readers have written in to answer
Feedback's question at the end of our item on a toilet seat that warns you if it is up or down (2 April): «Why doesn't everyone else just switch on the bathroom light?»

As I mentioned in my How

Readers post (that I also linked to above), we can sometimes model for others the type of
feedback we'd like to receive and hope that «teaches» them that, yes, there is a way to give constructive criticism and still be «nice.»
Once you've
done the best you can with your novel, with the help of
feedback from fellow workshop members or from beta
readers, it's time to get an editor and cover designer involved.
But before I
did that, I had experience interpreting beta
reader feedback.
As it stands, sites that require difficult login processes don't get as much
reader feedback, but those that allow basic anonymous commenting get the «grenade effect» of tossing a commentary grenade into the room and evacuating.
I'm
doing some writing now that'll benefit from

Pro writer tip: don't give a draft to beta
readers a week before the holidays and expect to receive prompt

Like critiquers and editors, beta
readers have to be able to leave their own egos out of their
feedback and not try to change your story into their own.When you've found someone who can
do that, and still give honest, constructive, useful advice, you've struck gold.

I don't know if it's just the circles I'm in, but I've noticed a large number of authors who've suddenly had trouble with beta
readers, who read a book and offer
feedback before publication.
Beta
readers who don't read our genre might not enjoy the story as much, which might taint their
feedback.
I just went through a month of soul - searching to decide if I should essentially swap my main plot and my sub plot, after a year of
feedback from
readers who don't believe the character would act based on the main plot.

How long

If you're planning to self publish,
do get lots of editorial and
reader feedback before settling on a title.
The
readers won't buy expensive electronic books, so the
feedback loop in traditional publishing is that electronic books don't sell well.
If we've ever read a book that didn't have a satisfying ending (or if we've received
feedback about an unsatisfying ending in our story), we could probably go back to this plot point and see that
reader expectations weren't set up properly.
You don't just write your book and submit it, you first need to get
feedback from beta
readers and from a professional.
What we try to
do is focus on giving all the entrants (whether they win or not) comprehensive
feedback from the
readers.

When your beta
readers do give you
feedback, thank them!
The key is to ask them to
do some things that ordinary
readers would
do: Mark things that take them out of the story, pacing issues, emotional
feedback, etc. «Beta reading is not about the
reader's knowledge of the craft of writing, but about what works and doesn't work for them as a
reader,» she states.
That doesn't necessarily mean they can't be beta
readers for us, but we have to recognize that we'll get only very high - level
feedback from them and that we need to search out additional beta
readers who can be more nitpicky.
