I'm not sure I necessarily believe this — I think it's more that people are seeing something that's common with books that become more popular: with most titles, you'll see fewer rave 5 - star
reviews once reviewers have no connection, however loose, to you (i.e.
friends of
friends,
readers of a blog where you were interviewed, acquaintances from Twitter, etc.).
We had 490 downloads, which is 490 new
readers who may go on to buy other books by the same author, or who might leave
reviews on the ebook, or who might mention the book to a
friend, helping promote it by word of mouth.
If you're asking a
review from a celebrity author in your genre, you either need a relationship, a mutual
friend to connect you, or a whole bunch of social proof first (a hundred
reviews from regular
readers for example).
This can be tough — you don't really want
reviews from
friends and family, because they're not your ideal
readers anyway; and selling books to
friends and family can actually HURT sales, because it screws up your «also - boughts» section on Amazon (which will confuse Amazon and result in less visibility).
When a book is added to a shelf or is
reviewed then it shows up in the update feeds of the
reader's
friends.
You'll be asking for these
reviews from your
friends, family, and beta -
readers.
Either by asking
friends, or «gifting» Kindle copies to my blog
readers or even paying for a few «honest
reviews».

Friends and family: Amazon wants authentic, unbiased
reviews, and so do we — the

I've actually ended up making some very good
friends that way, so I guess in a way some of the
reviews do come from «
friends,» but they were
readers before they became
friends.

review I am more pleased that the vast majority of mine are from
readers I have never met.

Readers also want to decide for themselves how many stars they're looking for in Kindle rankings, and how many
reviews are enough protection against gaming the system by an author or publisher's
friends and fellow booksellers.
These days, word - of - mouth is not only by way of a
friend, but also
reader reviews on Amazon and Goodreads.
Getting
reviews from people who are actually interested in your genre will also be more relevant and helpful to future
readers —
reviews from
friends and family, less so (although still much appreciated).
When power -
readers are looking for their next literary delight, chances are they're going to poke around and see what their
friends are reading and
reviewing on Goodreads.

The pros will continue to put up quality work, with great covers and enticing back cover blurbs and well edited sampling so that
readers will find new authors the same as they always have; having heard about an author from a
friend or seeing them mention in a blopg or on a writers site or panel, maybe an online
review, They'll «pick up» the book that looks attractive and interesting, check out the description and maybe reading the first few pages.

I also find some books through other sources, such as Amazon, BookBub (and other mailing lists), Facebook (e.g. the Avid
Readers of Christian Fiction group), Goodreads (what my
friends are reading and
reviewing), and through author email lists (perhaps that's a topic for another week).
Ask
friends, colleagues, and
readers to give your cover a critical
review.

The latter will be perceived as one where
readers are heading in droves in pursuit of a great and wonderful story, whereas the former — the book with seven
reviews — will be perceived as one read only by the author's mother and a handful of
friends.
But, like you mention of your
friend, even big media hits do not guarantee sales — because all PR can do is create awarenss and then once the
reader is aware of the book and sees that book, there are several other factors that determine whether they will buy the book: the book cover, the title, the jacket copy, the endorsements, the other
reviews.
I am a half - publisher myself, but as a
reader, I prefer to hear my
friends recommendations than the
reviews.
Reviews work, from mom or dad, or
friends and the occasional
reader and perhaps even those who read for money.
It is an author's loyal
readers who leave book
reviews on Amazon, blog about their books, buy their books, and tell their
friends to do the same.
They pay for books, they read books and they add
reviews and recommend books to
friends — What apart from
readers could be the foundation for Books and Publishing?
I loved that you could join or create groups to connect with other
readers who liked the same kinds of books, find new books through
friend suggestions,
review books, and so on.
Try to persuade your first
readers to write Amazon
reviews, blog posts and tell their

Some authors get
friends and family to post positive

readers soon smell a rat when they see these reviewers have never judged another book.
