lives of characters, showing not only what is
happening to them but also dramatically conveying how what is
happening feels.
For a
reader, there is no greater gift than
happening on a novel that is completely engrossing —
to the point where you're a little distracted until you finish the book, and the characters start
to take on
lives of their own in your imagination.
Although it's easy
to surmise what probably
happened to Werner's family, Zibart presents the harsh realities of Jewish
life both in Germany and as an immigrant in the U.S. in a manner appropriate for middle grade
readers.
I hope
readers tempted
to download from a pirate site will pause
to realize what will
happen if your favorite writers finally give up, because piracy no longer makes it possible for them
to write for a
living.
But nevertheless, it's essential
to provide an emotional landing place, so the
reader can put down the book with a sense that «Yes, it may not have
happened to me actually, but my
life is richer for having read this.
Emotion is always the key
to writing novels which make
readers live in the world of your fiction and care what
happens to the characters.
