As students progress from elementary school through high school, they need to rely on
reading comprehension not only for their literature classes, but also for solving mathematical word
problems and understanding texts
in science, social studies, and other subjects.
Results indicated that: (1) individual differences
in decoding ability have little effect on children's
reading comprehension, and vice versa; (2) early language understanding predicts
reading comprehension; (3) emerging knowledge about
reading predicts subsequent decoding ability; (4) children's early interest
in and involvement
in literacy predicts gains
in reading and (5) home
problems had a negative prediction on
reading.
The majority of
reading comprehension problems can be attributed to vocabulary deficits and a lack of general knowledge
in long term memory.
Using findings from a study of 545 teachers
in 33 schools
in Maryland, they found that when students had more opportunities to
