Three
schools participated
in the Opening Minds through the Arts curriculum, which incorporated music, opera, dance, theater, and visual arts into
reading, writing, math, and science, while the other two
schools used
standard teaching methodology.
Our results indicate that, on average, New York City's charter
schools raise their 3rd through 8th graders» math achievement by 0.09 of a
standard score and
reading achievement by 0.04 of a
standard score, compared with what would have happened had they remained
in traditional public

The success of the Massachusetts approach has important implications, especially as states roll out the new Common Core
standards academic goals for what students should be able to do
in reading and math at each grade level to ensure high
school students graduate ready for the demands of higher education and the 21st century workforce.

standards, a set of expectations
in reading and math developed by the nation's governors and state superintendents, but viewed by many conservatives as a federal plot to take over the

When Milwaukee was only a few years into its choice program, the
school board did something it had never done before - it enacted
standards for children to attain

standards that are now among the highest
in the nation.
Our own study (the largest rigorous study of KIPP) estimated that over three years KIPP middle
schools have an average cumulative impact of 0.21
standard deviations
in reading and 0.36
standard deviations
in math, roughly equivalent to an additional eight to 11 months of learning.
