Given the new demands levied by the Common Core
standards, teammates and ’14 master's degree graduates Taylor Percival, Michelle Skinner, and Jessica Yarmosky are busy with CommonLit, a free online library for middle school teachers to help them easily find
news articles, poetry, and other short texts aligned with the Common Core curriculum that help build
reading skills across a wide array of abilities.
But this morning, while
reading a new account of supposedly mounting state - level opposition, it hit me: at least for the moment, the common element of recent Common Core
news is the resilience of the
standards themselves.
In 2005, New York's mayor, Michael R. Bloomberg, held a
news conference at Public School 33 in the Bronx to celebrate an astonishing 49 - point jump in the proportion of fourth grade students there who met state
standards in
reading.
The good
news is that efforts such as the implementation of Common Core
reading and math
standards are key steps in addressing the woes that affect all families regardless of levels of education or income.

One piece of good
news for Amazon is that people may be able to
read Kindle books on their tablets, which will allow Amazon to maintain control of the ebook

And while that — in my opinion — is some pretty serious competition, the launch of a new
standard bearer in eBooks can only be good
news for any road warrior who loves to
read.
I stopped
reading, pondered the
news, and wondered why she'd write so long and personally about this fairly
standard co-representation.
