Exploring the complex interplay of invented and
real - world inspirations that led to this body of figure / ground
paintings, this volume presents a selection of 21 major
paintings and 36 related drawings,
collages, and photographs from that time period, as well as a new
painting from 2002 that reexamines related concerns.
But each of the artists» works are also about the misjudgment of a
real environment — a
real chair made out of special rope (Campana); a box made of terracotta and glaze (Cherubini); a lamp made out of found metal (Coolquitt); an abstract
painting titled after a transsexual (Ferris); and
collage, deceptively flat - looking, made from among other things, feather and beads (Alvarez).
The
real revelation in Ms. de Kooning's article, «Vicente
Paints a
Collage,» however, is that Vicente began his
collages with charcoal drawings rather than merely arranging bits of cut or torn paper.
In the collection, Chéri Samba dissects the world with the 2016
painting J'aime la coleur de la vraie carte du monde (I love the color of the
real map of the world); Ahmed Chiha
paints vibrant patterns over bamboo sticks, grouping them over a pile of sand; Zbel Manifesto collective collected trash for a week, using it to create an installation that looks like a dining room with Maria Callas's voice singing in the background; and Soukaina Aziz Al Idrissi hangs sheets with different textures together to form a dangling
collage.
A certain material vagueness in pigmented paper pulp thus seems ideal for Stockholder, who has always enjoyed the erasure of distinctions: between gross matter and art, composition and formlessness, narrative and abstraction, sculpture and
painting... «Having arrived at the Mill with digital prints of objects she photographed in her years and studio (bright plastic bowls and containers, a drinking bottle, some gaudy cakes that had seen better times) along with
real objects (fabric swatches, the floor mat) she proceeded to
collage and emboss them in stretches of pigmented paper pulp, working in collaboration with Paul Wong.
Vicente's initial forays into
