On the way up, increasing asset prices created a «
wealth effect» — those lucky enough to see the value of their home go up so much were more inclined the spend money, thereby stimulating the
real economy.
I should be clear, however, that as I am using the term, the «Pigou
effect» does not assume that the stock of money is constant, and all the
real wealth increase is due to deflation.

real key here is to determine the implications from a negative
wealth effect.
That said, it's not at all clear that the FOMC more generally has shifted from the theoretical view that there is a Phillips Curve between unemployment and inflation that can be manipulated by the Fed, nor the view that the Fed can exploit a meaningful «
wealth effect» from financial assets to the
real economy.
The purpose of the Bernanke - Yellen monetary policy has been to lower longer - term rates and pump up asset prices creating a
wealth effect to spur spending and
real economic growth.
The economist Jared Bernstein writes that the
real estate collapse that came several years later was harder on the overall U.S. economy because home price appreciation had created a broadly - felt
wealth effect and thus introduced broadly - felt pain.
When remaining
wealth is considered in
real terms after removing the
effects of inflation, the situation is not as grim, as the 2000 retiree is in better shape than retirees in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
