of practice that keep teachers from turning what they know about good instruction into
classroom reality?
This design extends reflection on reform - based
practices into teachers» first school placements, as science teachers tend to revert back to traditional
practices as they experience the
reality of the
classroom (Simmons et al., 1999).
They may be masters in the
classroom but the
reality of contact with patients makes them realize that the
practice of medicine is not for them.
Preservice teachers often struggle with making sense
of what they have learned in their methods courses about «research - based
practice» and the
reality that they find in the
classrooms in which they are placed for observations and teaching experiences.
During the residency year, each Fellow trains in the
classroom of a lead teacher and learns professional best
practices while immersed in the
realities of day - to - day teaching responsibilities.
While research - informed
practices are important, this process can often mean that the interventions are unrealistic or disconnected from the hectic
reality of many
classrooms, and are rarely used.
Due to the newness
of commercially available virtual
reality headsets, the vast majority
of teachers who expressed interest in using VR in schools for our study had not yet developed any sort
of competence in the use
of the equipment or best
practices for implementing VR into the
classroom.
According to a recent Phi Delta Kappa / Gallup poll, the majority
of Americans believe that teachers should spend at least one year
practicing teaching before entering
classrooms of their own — 44 percent
of respondents said one year and 27 percent said two years.88 Only 4 percent
of Americans said that teachers should spend six weeks
practice teaching before assuming responsibility for their own class, a length
of time far closer to the current
reality for many prospective teachers.

of translating college - and career - ready standards from policy adoption by States to
reality in the
classroom.
