received a new trachea (windpipe) which had been grown from a

GVHD affects up to half of the more than 30,000 people worldwide each year who

stem cells.
Of these 34 patients, 13 (38 %) have remained in remission for five years, and an additional two patients whose disease did not progress after BV went on to achieve remission after
receiving allogeneic

stem cells are taken from a
donor and administered to the patient).
But for blood cancer patients who
receive donor hematopoietic
stem cell transplants as part of their treatment, graft - versus - host disease (GVHD) often hampers their recovery.
Patients
receive one of two types of
stem cell - based transplants: autologous, in which a patient donates and
receives back his / her own
stem cells; or allogeneic, in which bone marrow - derived
stem cells come from a related or unrelated
donor whose human leukocyte antigens (HLA) are genetically matched with those of a patient.
Treatments are limited — some patients
receive transplants of
stem cells found in bone marrow from which blood cells develop, but
donors are hard to come by and the procedure holds risky complications for recipients.
Transplants types are categorized by the source of the
donor: Autologous transplants: Patients
receive their own
stem cells.
No matter how the
stem cells are harvested, the recipient is first treated with high - dose anticancer drugs and / or radiation, and then
receives the
donor cells through an intravenous infusion.
