«The Arctic system is moving toward a new state that falls outside the envelope of glacial - interglacial fluctuations that prevailed during
recent Earth history.
Recent Earth history has featured quasi -100,000-y, glacial − interglacial climate cycles with lower / higher temperatures and greenhouse gas concentrations during glacials / interglacials.
And capitalist - technocratic, because the dominant narrative of the Anthropocene has technology as its driver:
recent Earth history reduced to a succession of inventions (fire, the combustion engine, the synthesis of plastic, nuclear weaponry).
Here we are not dealing with large volcanic eruptions of the size of Pinatubo of Mount St. Helens, here we are talking about extreme events: The Toba caldera in the Sumatra subduction zone in Indonesia originated from one of the largest volcanic eruption in
recent Earth history, about 74,000 years ago.

Remarkable and significant as is the emergence of self - conscious persons by natural processes from the original «hot big bang» from which the universe has expanded over the last 10 - 20 thousand million years, this must not be allowed to obscure another fact about humanity, namely its relatively

«This continually unfolding emergence of new and intricately organised systems and organisms strongly suggests a directionality in the

For all Lingard's bullishness,

The hobbits overlapped in time and space with Homo sapiens, showing that even in relatively

Washington, DC — Reservoirs of oxygen - rich iron between the

William Ruddiman has proposed the early anthropocene hypothesis, according to which the anthropocene era, as some people call the most
recent period in the
Earth's
history when the activities of the human race first began to have a significant global impact on the
Earth's climate and ecosystems, did not begin in the eighteenth century with the advent of the Industrial Era, but dates back to 8000 years ago, due to intense farming activities of our early agrarian ancestors.
This expected large sea - level rise does of course not surprise us paleoclimatologists, given that in earlier warm periods of
Earth's

Paul from VA writes: ``... the obsession with finding «natural cycles» to explain the
recent temperature
history of the
Earth»
Also, with respect to L&S 2011 and the probative nature of Jupiter / Saturn and
Earth's climate over the past ~ 150 years, if Jupiter / Saturn are the major drivers of today's
recent climate
history, then where were thes two gas giants prior to aboot 150 years ago?
On reading that article, I can't help but notice the intriguing similarity between the Ptolemeic solar system and the obsession with finding «natural cycles» to explain the
recent temperature
history of the
Earth such as those referenced 2 articles ago on this very site.
However, a review of the
earth's most
recent «geological
history» brings into question both assumptions and puts the entire subject in a different light.
Nor can any such conclusion be reconciled with the relations between temperature and sea level rise during the
recent history of
Earth, which are in the very minimum +8 meters per +1 degree C (as in the mid-Pliocene (3 Ma), or about +20 meters per +1 degree C in the Youngest dryas (11 230 years ago).
The El Nino / La Nina oscillation, moreover, provides some interesting context to the
Earth's
recent temperature
history.
The result is that over
recent geologic
history the
Earth has normally been much colder than it now is.
The scientists chose the period of time known as the «Holocene» for their research, because it is the most
recent natural warm phase in
Earth's
history.
Never in
recent geological
history and during the time in which humans have been on the
Earth has the atmospheric CO2 concentration been as high as it is today.

Some
recent history: in 2011, the environmental advocacy groups Friends of the
Earth and Public Citizen partnered with climate deniers at the Heartland Institute (which received funding from the Koch Brothers) under the watchful eye of the Taxpayers for Common Sense to produce the non-partisan Green Scissors report.
This snowpack accumulation near the poles, which gets its water via the Arctic and Antarctic oceans, that in turn rob it from equatorial latitudes of our oceans, also results in a reduction in the
earth's spin axis moment of inertia and causes the spin rate to increase as evidenced in the
recent history of the rate at which Leap Seconds are added to our calendar (see Wysmuller's Toucan Equation for more on this evidence that during this warm time with much greater polar humidity, earlier seasonal, later seasonal and heavier snows are beginning to move water vapor from the oceans to the poles to re-build the polar ice caps and lead us into a global cooling, while man - made CO2 continues to increase http://www.colderside.com/faq.htm).
I would contend that in
earths recent history, the odds of cold are higher than the odds of hot.
Looking only at a very narrow window of the
Earth's climate
history, many climatologists and politicians claim the
recent period of warming is evidence of a dangerous human - induced warming.
This era in turn marks the most
recent part of the Phanerozoic aeon, the 540m - year chunk of the
Earth's
history wherein rocks with fossils of complex organisms can be found.
If you're suggesting something about the
recent changes is a) unprecedented in
earth's
history, and / or b) attributable mostly to humans burning fossil fuels, then you've got a ways to go before the (real) science is «in» or «settled».
A
recent comprehensive review [7] reveals that there are still wide uncertainties about the
Earth's sea - level
history that are especially large for time scales of tens of millions of years or longer, which is long enough for substantial changes in the shape and volume of ocean basins.
This scenario is actually more in line with
recent — past 100,000 years — geological
history, which has mostly been Ice Age, and planetary observations, which show the surface temperatures of Mars and Venus have recently risen at about the same rate as
Earth's.
Geology had long relegated humanity to the sidelines, but in
recent history, the human fingerprint on the
Earth had grown too deep to be ignored, he said.
The authors explain how scientists piece together the
Earth's «climate
history» from tree rings, mud cores, ice cores, and other sources; how this
history compares with
recent climate patterns; and how greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide - much of it human - made - are impacting climate.
The «Little Ice Age,» the most
recent cool period in the
Earth's
history, may have been triggered by decades of intense volcanic activity.
Many here may be most familiar with Paul's most
recent work on Neoproterozoic climate
history, often simplified as «Snowball
Earth» and not his first twenty - five years of work on the origin and development of continental lithosphere.
The climate model simulations also suggest that
Earth's climate was in a «typical» greenhouse state, with temperatures similar to more
recent, and better understood, greenhouse intervals in
Earth's climate
history, like the late Mesozoic and early Cenozoic eras.
