This collection of more than 100
works spanning from Baselitz's earliest years to the present day offers an unparalleled overview of his oeuvre, as well as insight into the subtle changes that have come to his
work as he has matured: In
recent years the distinctive visual universe that grew out of the
artist's study of art, myth and literature has expanded to make room for the personal, for memories of an upbringing in the German and Slavic cultural borderland, for everyday
life and his family and for revisiting
works by himself and others.
Put together
by curator Lorne Falk shortly before his departure last summer from the Banff Centre's Walter Phillips Gallery, this exhibit surveys some
recent paintings, drawings and mixed - media
works by five
artists living,
working and pulse - taking in Berlin.
«An International Survey of
Recent Painting and Sculpture,» the first major international survey exhibition at the Modern since 1970, is regarded as a response of sorts to persistent criticism
by some
artists and critics that the museum has long been biased in favor of
work produced earlier in the century and has largely ignored
living artists as a result.
Fittingly, the final exhibition in the San Francisco gallery focuses on
recent works by nine
artists who currently
live and
work in the neighborhood, or got their start in Hanley's northern - California outpost.
The exhibition will be presented in three parts over the course of a year, and features
recent work produced
by artists living both in Cuba and abroad.
Proceeding with this objective, in
recent years KMAC has accessioned
work by artists such as Wendell Castle, Ebony Patterson, and Simone Leigh; all
living artists whose
work is grounded in the materials and processes representative of traditional craft also who maintain positions as noteworthy figures within the landscape of contemporary art.
