First, we brainstormed ways in which the entire class might be recognized for positive behavior that was goal oriented, such as 100 percent of students handing in homework, or being
recognized by other teachers for showing Respect, Responsibility, and being Ready to Learn (the Pond Road Middle School Positive Behavior Support Program).

The
teacher's approach to such problems might start from three assumptions: (a) the
teacher should be concerned with how science fits into the larger framework of life, and the student should raise questions about the meaning of what he studies and its relation to
other fields; (b) controversial questions can be treated, not in a spirit of indoctrination, but with an emphasis on asking questions and helping students think through assumptions and implications; an effort should be made to present viewpoints
other than one's own as fairly as possible, respecting the integrity of the student
by avoiding undue imposition of the lecturer's beliefs; (c) presuppositions inevitably enter the classroom presentation of many subjects, so that a viewpoint frankly and explicitly
recognized may be less dangerous than one which is hidden and assumed not to exist.
She is well known
by state education leaders, and education experts at universities and in the non-profit sector and has been
recognized with multiple awards for her education reporting
by the California Newspaper Publishers Association, the San Francisco Peninsula Press Club and the California
Teachers Association among
others.
This outcome can be achieved
by providing experiences that allow
teacher leaders to struggle with material,
recognize potential areas for their own growth, and learn from each
other.
Really great milestones have been accomplished as we were the first charter school to receive the Exemplary Independent Study Recognition Award from the California Department of Education (CDE) and the California Consortium for Independent Study, one of our
teachers being honored for
teacher of the year, being awarded charter school leader of the year
by CCSA, our high school being
recognized as a 2013 California Distinguished School
by the CDE, and the ability to serve as a model and partner for
other charter schools to succeed.
Chang and the nine
other Regional
Teachers of the Year will be
recognized by the State Board of Education during its August 14 meeting.
