Instead, the commission unanimously approved a motion by Commissioner Fred McClure that
recognizes lethal injection as the preferred method of euthanasia that should be used whenever possible.
Euthanasia by
injection (EBI), using a
lethal dose of a barbituate, emerged in the 1960s; today, all major animal welfare organizations, including The HSUS, National Animal Care & Control Association and Association of Shelter Veterinarians, as well as the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA),
recognize it as the most humane form of euthanasia.
