On Thursday, with the New York State Board of Regents hearing testimony regarding the newly approved
teacher evaluation system, leading education reform organization StudentsFirstNY and public school parents offered
recommendations and sent letters calling for a
system that ensures all public school students have access to high - quality
teachers.
In the report, StudentsFirstNY also presents
recommendations for New York City schools including financial incentives for retaining effective
teachers and an agreement between the City and the
teachers» union
on a new
teacher evaluation system.
Although the Common Core task force wasn't asked by the governor to review the politically fraught
teacher evaluation system, the group had felt compelled to make a

And last month, the
recommendations of E4E members were incorporated into the agreement
on a statewide
teacher evaluation system.

Educators 4 Excellence - New York Executive Director Jonathan Schleifer said he supported
recommendations that focused
on teacher preparation, but said it was «impossible to have a serious discussion about many of these
recommendations» until
evaluation systems were in place.

teachers; student - focused professional development designed at the school site; direct investment in community engagement; and financial incentives to attract and keep
teachers making progress with their students (based
on a multi-measured
evaluation system) in hard - to - staff schools.
The online Carnegie Knowledge Network provided education policymakers and practitioners with timely, authoritative research and
recommendations on the use of value - added methodologies in
teacher evaluation systems.
On May 17, the HSTA - HIDOE Joint Committee presented
recommendations, approved by the Superintendent, to the Board of Education to remove student test scores [measured in the previous version of the
evaluation system as median Student Growth Percentiles (SPG)-RSB- as required for
teacher performance

systems include not only the instruments used for
evaluation but also the expertise of the consulting
teachers or mentors — skilled
teachers in the same subject areas and school levels who have released time to serve as mentors to support their fellow
teachers — and the
system of due process and review that involve a panel of both
teachers and administrators in making
recommendations about personnel decisions based
on the evidence presented to them from the
evaluations.
