When attempting to establish an accurate past global temperature record, one question scientists have raised is to what extent the location of meteorological centers might impact or skew data.

And, these results clearly demonstrate — 13 times in fact — that once just the ENSO impacts on temperature data are accounted for, there is no «record setting» warming to be concerned about.

Over the next 3 years the Ocean Colour Climate Change Initiative project aims to: Develop and validate algorithms to meet the Ocean Colour GCOS ECV requirements for consistent, stable, error - characterized global satellite data products from multi-sensor data archives; Produce and validate, within an R&D context, the most complete and consistent possible time series of multi-sensor global satellite data products for climate research and modelling; Optimize the impact of MERIS data on climate data records; Generate complete specifications for an operational production system; Strengthen inter-disciplinary cooperation between international Earth observation, climate research and modelling communities, in pursuit of scientific excellence.

It looks to me like the data themselves are an improvement, but the interpretation of what they mean are doubtful, in particular regarding a) the UHI impact on the record and b) the attribution of the observed warming to GHG emissions.

The data I have seen, doesn't show much impact of the change in the US record on the global record, and you haven't shown anything that indicates that the US changes significantly impacted the global record.

In fact, the impact of the US data revisions on the global record is negligible, and most real scientists, and really anyone who has followed the recent global temperature records, know that.

2 (Validity of surface record): I would agree with Judith that the jury is still out on this one; also the word «modestly» (for impact of UHI, station shutdowns and relocations, sparse data, etc,) is purely speculative.

However, because of issues related to data quality, the low frequency of extreme event impacts, limited length of the time series, and various societal factors present in the disaster loss record, it is still not possible to determine the portion of the increase in damages that might be attributed to climate change brought about by greenhouse gas emissions (S1).

Of course if the actual recorded at the time temperature data was released as a full data base with official blessing it would probably only be a matter of quite as short time before it would be decided by the climate interested public and politicals that all that morphed out of reality, adjusted data those scientists were playing with on their play stations wasn't really needed as it bore no resemblance to reality nor had any sort of any perceptible impact or effect on society and their funding should and would consequently cease.

The results have implications for how we interpret the impact of global warming on the hydrological cycle and its extremes, and may help to explain why palaeoclimate drought reconstructions based on tree - ring data diverge from the PDSI - based drought record in recent years9, 10.

Infilling occurs in the USHCN network in two different cases: when the raw data is not available for a station, and when the PHA flags the raw data as too uncertain to homogenize (e.g. in between two station moves when there is not a long enough record to determine with certainty the impact that the initial move had).
