What is editorially — and theologically — affirmed first by the Yahwist and tacitly by all subsequent handlers of the tradition (since they do not see fit to make any radical alteration
in the Yahwist's outline) comes about not from the heavy -
handed use of the
red pencil, so to speak, but by the much more subtle editorializing achieved by the selection, arrangement, and juxtaposition of stories originally independent of one another.
