"red tide" refers to a phenomenon when water in the ocean or a lake turns red or reddish-brown. It happens because of the overgrowth of certain microscopic organisms called algae. These algae can sometimes produce toxins that harm marine life and can even be dangerous to humans if we consume contaminated seafood.
