Korean Air's SKYPASS program is a great alternative to use for first class
redemptions on Delta flights.
It's long been a curious fact about the Mileage Plan program that BusinessElite
redemptions on Delta to Europe cost just 90,000 Mileage Plan miles, while the same ticket would cost 100,000 Skymiles.
Another is using Air France «s Flying Blue program for
redemptions on Delta rather than depositing miles into Delta directly.
As discussed in our Membership Rewards breakdown on Wednesday, Air France's FlyingBlue program allows for one - way domestic
redemptions on Delta for half the miles!
I noted in that particular circumstance
the redemption on Delta was not only more available but cheaper than either United or American.
Not exact matches
Because you can earn 7 miles per dollar spent
on Delta flights with this card, this high
redemption rate gives the card a huge boost in value.
While
Delta offers a variety of
redemption options for your SkyMiles — including merchandise and gift cards — your best option, by far, is redeeming SkyMiles for airfare
on Delta or with one of
Delta's 19 SkyTeam alliance partners.
Remember that when you use your SkyMiles towards flights
on Delta or any of their partner airlines the
redemption values can vary.
Unfortunately,
Delta Air Lines does not publish an award chart, and instead provides the
redemption rate based
on a number of factors that the airline decides.
Redemption rates start at just 10,000 SkyMiles ® for select one - way domestic flights in the continental U.S. and Alaska
on Delta Air Lines.
Redemption of these SkyMiles provide discounts
on Delta flights which is a considerable benefit for the
Delta regular; however, the SkyMiles system is just one aspect of the Gold
Delta card travel benefit package.
As a result, the
redemption rates are quite reasonable
on Delta, and much better than
Delta's own SkyMiles program.
As you can see, Flying Blue requires 5,000 more miles to fly
Delta than Korean Air SkyPass, but it has the same
redemption rate for award flights
on Alaska Airlines.
When I called to Air France to ask about a Flying Blue mile
redemption on its partner
Delta (between Hawaii and Las Vegas), the person who answered seem to immediately think this wouldn't be available.
Bottom Line: You can earn up to $ 1,600 + in value in just point
redemptions with the Gold
Delta SkyMiles ® Business Credit Card from American Express, plus other benefits
on top!
And oddly enough, the needlessly complicated 5 - tier
Delta award chart (which of course doesn't actually exist, wink, wink) means that when lowest - level
redemptions aren't available
on any airline and you're considering a more expensive award,
Delta may actually be cheaper than the others thanks to all their intermediate award tiers.
The same rules and tips apply for award
redemptions on United or
Delta, too.

I recently redeemed Flying Club miles
on Delta and the process was awkward but uneventful, so I thought perhaps it'd be helpful to keep a stash of them for little
redemptions like that.
The flip side of that are the huge taxes and fees levied
on long - haul Avios
redemptions on British Airways flights through London, which mean those
redemptions, particularly in premium cabins, are almost never worth making compared to

Delta hub, it's possible to achieve better
redemption values
on certain routes.
Beyond that, though,
Delta's partner network offers some really great
redemptions within Europe and South America, so for short hops to hard - to - reach destinations that can easily run you $ 500 or more, you can cruise over in business class
on 40,000 or 50,000 miles.
Often if you're low
on points
on a certain airline, or having trouble finding low - level
redemptions in both directions
on the flights you need, it makes sense to split your itinerary
on two airlines, but there's no point doing this with
Delta.

I hardly found any Domestic business class awards that are reasonably priced,

redemptions on any airline, while the

redemptions to their respective airlines and their partners.
In business class, however,
Delta typically costs more than its peers, though United's expensive
redemptions on its partner airlines are an exception to that rule.
While miles can only be redeemed for tickets
on Delta and its partner airlines, you'll be earning a large number of miles with this card and there are plenty of
redemptions that offer good value.
Some good Flying Blue
redemptions include travel in economy class between the continental U.S. and Hawaii, which costs just 30,000 miles with Flying Blue compared to 40,000 miles
on Delta.
While it'd be hard to go wrong with the Green card's
redemption options, the SkyMiles card has more to offer if you fly
on Delta.

You can find some decent
redemption rates to South America but best of all you can minimize the fees by flying
on SkyTeam partners, such as
Delta or AeroMexico.
The most expensive first
redemption only applies to flights
on Etihad, while Virgin Atlantic's upper class and
Delta and Virgin Americas first classes fall under business
redemptions.
Air New Zealand flies to Auckland from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Houston, and Virgin Atlantic offers a much better
redemption value going to the region than you can get
on American, United, or (God forbid)
Delta.
One area
Delta has not spelled out is changes
on the
redemption side.
For years, fliers have complained about stingy award availability
on Delta flights at the lowest
redemption levels.
