But according to the steady state theory, quasars are being expelled by galaxies, so in these cases the high
redshifts indicate the rapid motion of objects that could be relatively nearby.
Not exact matches
Green, yellow, orange and red circles
indicate successively higher
redshifts, and galaxies that are progressively further away from the Earth.
The colours represent the degree of
redshift seen, with the bluer circles
indicating galaxies nearer to the Earth, and so less
redshifted.
(b) Split of the
redshifted (turning away from us) and blueshifted (turning toward us) emission of the jet in order to show the spinning motion of the jet, as
indicated by the green arrows.
If
redshifted starlight always
indicates a star's velocity, then a multi-billion-year-old universe is completely inconsistent with what is observed.
Away from the Galactic plane, vast majority of the dots are galaxies, color coded to
indicate distance, with blue dots representing the nearest galaxies in the 2Mass survey, and red dots
indicating the most distant survey galaxies that lie at a
redshift near 0.1.
Based on the extreme, deduced photometric
redshift of GRB 000131
indicating that the gamma rays had travelled an extreme long cosmological distance, astronomers predicted a «break» in the red region of the spectrum around 670 to 700 nm from the strong absorption of light from intervening intergalactic hydrogen clouds along the line of sight between GRB 000131 and the Solar System.
On June 29, 2011, a team of astronomers using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope and other telescopes around the world announced their detection of ULAS J1120 +0641, which is the oldest known quasar measured thus far with a
redshift of z ~ 7.08 and which
indicates that its light has taken around 12.9 billion years to reach Earth from just 770 million years after the Big Bang (ESO science release).
