The coral community on the outer reef in South Tarawa is different from that at the other outer
reef sites studied; South Tarawa is dominated by the weedy encrusting species Porites rus, while at the other sites the coral community is dominated by massive Porites spp., Heliopora spp., Montipora spp. and Favia spp. [47].

To get some idea of what climate change will likely mean for the
reefs, the World Heritage Centre asked coral experts at NOAA and elsewhere to produce what they claim is a first of its kind

And she said some of her graduate students will conduct
studies with her at the Moorea Coral
Reef Long - term Ecological Research
site in French Polynesia.
She hopes to develop an undergraduate course in coral
reef studies that will include travel to one of her field
sites in the Caribbean.
Over the past five years AIMS researchers have been
studying the area, which is the only known CO2 seep
site in coral
reef ecosystems in the world.

Reef Studies spent the past month with colleagues surveying coral bleaching at 21
sites across seven
reefs in the Coral Sea Commonwealth Marine Reserve.
