What is less clear
to me is why complementarians like Keller insist that that 1 Timothy 2:12 is a part of biblical womanhood, but Acts 2 is not; why the presence of twelve male disciples implies restrictions on female leadership, but the presence of the apostle Junia is inconsequential; why the Greco - Roman household codes represent God's ideal familial structure for husbands and wives, but not for slaves and masters; why the apostle Paul's instructions
to Timothy about Ephesian women teaching in the church are universally applicable, but his instructions
to Corinthian women
regarding head coverings are culturally conditioned (even though Paul uses the same line of argumentation — appealing the creation narrative —
to support both); why the poetry of Proverbs 31 is often applied prescriptively and
other poetry is not; why Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob represent the supremecy of male leadership while Deborah and Huldah and Miriam are mere exceptions
to the rule; why «wives submit
to your husbands» carries more weight than «submit one
to another»; why the laws of the Old Testament are treated as irrelevant in one moment, but important enough
to display in public courthouses and schools the next; why a feminist reading of the text represents a capitulation
to culture but a reading that turns an ancient Near Eastern text into an apologetic for the post-Industrial Revolution nuclear family is not; why the curse of Genesis 3 has the final word on gender relationships rather than the new creation that began at the resurrection.

«Scripture's male - female prerequisite for marriage and its attendant rejection of homosexual behavior is pervasive throughout both Testaments of Scripture (i.e. it is everywhere presumed in sexual discussions even when not explicitly mentioned); it is absolute (i.e. no exceptions are ever given, unlike even incest and polyamory); it is strongly proscribed (i.e. every mention of it in Scripture indicates that it is
regarded as a foundational violation of sexual ethics); and it is countercultural (i.e. we know of no
other culture in the ancient Near East or Greco - Roman Mediterranean basin more consistently and strongly opposed
to homosexual practice).

This tentative model for understanding the causes of problem drinking is offered in the report of the Cooperative Commission on the Study of Alcoholism: «An individual who (1) responds
to beverage alcohol in a certain way, perhaps physiologically determined, by experiencing intense relief and relaxation, and who (2) has certain personality characteristics, such as difficulty in dealing with and overcoming depression, frustration, and anxiety, and who (3) is a member of a
culture in which there is both pressure
to drink and culturally induced guilt and confusion
regarding what kinds of drinking behavior are appropriate, is more likely
to develop trouble than will most
other people.»

to Webb.

regarding contextualization is described helpfully by David Wells in his essay: «In the one understanding of contextualization, the revelatory trajectory moves only from authoritative Word into contemporary
culture; in the
other, the trajectory moves both from text

to text...» Increasingly, evangelicals are opting for the second of these models - an «interactionist» approach,
to use William Dymess» terminology.
First of all, it implies some superficial beliefs about the place of sexuality in human experience (we might
regard these as being in the antechamber of the temple of sacred sexuality proper): the belief that sexuality is a key, perhaps even the key, component of the quality of being human (in this, of course, lies the pervasive heritage of Freud); the belief that modern Western
culture, and especially American
culture, has unduly suppressed sexuality (this is the anti-Puritan aspect of the proposition), and, that, as a result, not only are we sexually frustrated (and that frustration carries all sorts of physical and psychological pathologies in its wake), but our entire relation
to our own bodies as well as the bodies of
others has become distorted.
