The researchers detected a «significant
regional flux» of methane, a greenhouse gas with about 30 times the
warming potential of carbon dioxide over a 100 - year period,
coming from an area of gas wells in southwestern Pennsylvania.
If the onset of maturity
comes earlier in the season, it means that grapes ripen during a
warmer period — affecting sugar levels, aromas and flavors and changing the unique identity that connoisseurs look for in
regional wines.
While a strong El Niño and other climate patterns are playing a role in
regional and global temperatures, the vast majority of the excess heat this year
comes from manmade global
warming, a Climate Central analysis showed.
In this regard, I would observe that at least one important AGW effect, rising sea level, does not depend on a specific
regional outcome so much as on global mean T. (At least, I think this is so (because my understanding is that most of the rise
comes from lower density of
warmer water, not from melting ice sheets — though again, not 100 % sure on this point)-RRB-.
Pressing the frontiers of climate science and related research is vital, but it's wishful thinking to expect further science to substantially narrow uncertainties on time scales that matter when it
comes to
regional or short - term climate forecasting, the range of possible
warming from a big buildup of carbon dioxide, the impact of greenhouse forcing on rare extremes and the like.
The climate scientists behind the report are less ready, however, to predict what the specific impacts of global
warming will look like in the
coming decades, meaning it won't be very useful for
regional planners.
«With continued global
warming, we're going to see more and more of these unprecedented
regional conditions, and with them will
come more and more costs to humans and the things they value.
«Marked periods like the
warming anomaly in the Middle Ages or the small ice age
come up on a
regional level but don't show a single global picture,» said Heinz Wanner, the study's lead researcher.
The researchers cautioned that this extreme event provides a glimpse into the region's future as greenhouse gases continue to increase, and the signal of a
warming climate, even at this
regional scale, begins to emerge more clearly from natural variability in
coming decades.
