Whereas other dealers supported their artists only through proceeds from the
sale of their work, Castelli was known for providing his artists with a
regular stipend regardless of whether their work sold or not — a generous strategy that allowed him to nurture artists until they grew fashionable, and to help others survive
dips in demand.
