Physical punishment is associated with a range
of mental health problems in children, youth and adults, including depression, unhappiness, anxiety, feelings
of hopelessness,
use of drugs and alcohol, and general psychological maladjustment.26 — 29 These relationships may be mediated by disruptions in parent — child attachment resulting from pain inflicted by a caregiver, 30,31 by increased levels
of cortisol32 or by
chemical disruption
of the brain's mechanism for
regulating stress.33 Researchers are also finding that physical punishment is linked to slower cognitive development and adversely affects academic achievement.34 These findings come from large longitudinal studies that control for a wide range
of potential confounders.35 Intriguing results are now emerging from neuroimaging studies, which suggest that physical punishment may reduce the volume
of the brain's grey matter in areas associated with performance on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, third edition (WAIS - III).36 In addition, physical punishment can cause alterations in the dopaminergic regions associated with vulnerability to the abuse
of drugs and alcohol.37
The
chemical plants were largely self -
regulated and manufacturers

chemicals released.

Using juvenile and adolescent mice, Jeffrey Edwards and colleagues investigated the effects
of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the
chemical in marijuana responsible for its effects on cognition and behavior, on VTA GABA cells, an understudied inhibitory cell type in the reward system that
regulates dopamine levels.
Antidepressants are prescribed to alleviate the symptoms

Chemical signaling helps

of Chicago have uncovered an important mechanism
used by the developing brain to pattern nerve connections in the part
of the brain that interprets visual signals.

A 2009 scientific review about environmental
chemicals and thyroid function concluded, «Available evidence suggests that governing agencies need to

use of thyroid - disrupting
chemicals, particularly as such
uses relate exposures

There are approximately 85,000

But pollution also covers hundreds
of chemicals which are fine or even beneficial at low levels but which if released in large quantities or in problematic circumstances cause «harm» — like phosphorus (grows your veges but also leads to toxic cyanobacterial blooms which kill cattle), nitrogen (grows crops kills many native species
of plants and promotes weed growth costing farmers), copper (
used as an oxygen carrier by gastropods but in high concentrations kills the life in sediments which feed fish), hormones like oestrogen (essential for
regulating bodies but in high concentrations confuse reproductive cycles especially with marine life) or maybe molasses from a sugar mill (good for rum but when dumped into east coast estuaries
used to cause oxygen sag in estuaries leading to massive fish kills).

Gradually, over repeated «scaffolding» by the «regulatory other»
of the parent for the child's state transitions from disorganized and dysregulated brain states to organized and
regulated brain states, the child's brain develops («canalizes») the neural pathways for this state transition through
use - dependent structural and
chemical processes, so that eventually the child is able to make this transition from an impending dysregulated brain state / behavior into a
regulated brain state / behavior independently
of the need for scaffolding support from the «regulatory other»
of the parent.
