Quite different consequences follow for
our relation to other animals and to the biosphere as a whole.
That fact has nothing to do with any valuation of humans we might care to make in
relation to other animals.
Not exact matches
For a Whiteheadian it is more natural and correct
to speak of the
relation as between human beings and «
other»
animals; for humanity is one species of
animals.
The code of laws provides the regulations which create the proper
relations between man and God, such as saying prayers, fasting, and
other religious duties; they guide man in his
relations with his brother in Islam or the non-Muslim community, in organizing the structure of the family and encouraging reciprocal affection; they lead man
to an understanding of his place in the universe, encouraging research into the nature of man and
animals and guiding man in the use of the benefits of the natural world.
In fact, some would say that there is no human value or goodness unless this value pattern is exemplified in our activities; that the capacity
to realize this structure of
relations in our lives (
to a greater extent than can the
other animals) is what largely constitutes our humanity.
His duty is
to so direct his own affairs and so
to have regard for all
other creatures as
to develop a future in which there is peace not only between man and man but between man and
animal and between man and the whole delicate system of
relations that makes the earth a cradle of life.
If kinship
relations with
other human beings have not been important
to Marxist theory and practice, then it is unlikely that there is much emphasis on human kinship
to other animals and
to the natural environment generally.
Moreover, since it can be applied
to divine and angelic individuals as well as human, it defines the human being not only as he is knowable in his
relation to the rest of created reality — as one biological species among
others, i.e. as a rational
animal — but also as he is knowable in his
relation to other personal beings, angelic and divine.
But — just as our human rights underdetermine our rights as citizens of a particular country — the «human rights» of
animals (grounded in intrinsic moral status) under - determine rights (and duties) owed
to (and by) individual
animals on the basis of their
relations with
other human and
animal community members.
