One reason that constructive communication is associated with
positive relational outcomes such as marital satisfaction is because partners feel more satisfied with the interaction when they engage in constructive communication.
Moreover, communication satisfaction mediated the association between conflict behaviors and
relational outcomes such as trust, intimacy and relational satisfaction.
Future research should implement longitudinal methods to examine the variability in communication technology's effects on relationships, as well as any variables that may affect its influence
on relational outcomes.
In other words, constructive communication was positively associated with communication satisfaction, which in turn, predicted
positive relational outcomes.
No prior research has examined and compared the associations of several communication technologies with
relational outcomes in such a large and diverse sample of individuals in LDRs.
Lindsey Rodriguez, M.A. - Science of Relationships articles Lindsey's interests include the development of a comprehensive, dyadic perspective for examining how problematic alcohol use and interpersonal relationship processes interact to influence various physical, emotional, and
relational outcomes for individuals and their relationship partners.
Our purpose in this research was to investigate the use of various mediums of communication technologies in long distance relationships (LDRs) and how their use is associated
with relational outcomes (e.g., relationship satisfaction).
Previous studies have found associations between the individual discrepancy of desired sexual frequency and actual sexual frequency and
relational outcomes among premarital couples.
Moreover, there may be
other relational outcomes (e.g., love, conflict, communication) or individual variables (e.g., ethnicity, sexual orientation) not addressed in the present investigation, which might influence the links between these perceptions, satisfaction, and commitment.
These results indicate that specific aspects of mindfulness may play unique roles in cultivating
certain relational outcomes such as increased satisfaction and commitment through individuals» orientation to their relationship and themselves, although the causal nature of this contention remains to be studied.
Indeed, researchers have generally neglected the study of perceptions of relationship initiation work, despite widespread recognition of the importance of the initiation phase for
later relational outcomes (see Berscheid & Regan, 2005; Clark, Shaver, & Abrahams, 1999)
A third goal was to
explore relational outcomes (i.e., satisfaction and commitment) associated with these perceptions, and whether the link between perceptions and relationship outcomes differs as a function of partner gender.
Schrodt and colleagues meta - analysis revealed that the demand - withdraw pattern showed a «moderate and meaningful» (p. 47) relationship to a variety of
negative relational outcomes.
Overall, the findings of the present study not only relate to the existing literature on satisfaction in LDRs, but also expand upon the limited research that has examined the impact of communication technology
on relational outcomes.
It is evident that Skype, compared to all other communication channels, is unique in its association with positive
relational outcomes in LDRs.
Lindsey Rodriguez, Ph.D. - Science of Relationships articles Lindsey's interests include the development of a comprehensive, dyadic perspective for examining how problematic alcohol use and interpersonal relationship processes interact to influence various physical, emotional, and
relational outcomes for individuals and their relationship partners.
«Through the analysis, I found that behaviors an individual uses to show he or she cares about his or her friend, specifically behaviors uniquely directed to the friend, are related to positive
relational outcomes, such as increased closeness or satisfaction with the friendship.
An APIM analysis allows researchers to determine the unique effects that both an individual and his or her friend have on
the relational outcomes,» she explained.
Schrodt, Witt, and Shimkowski (2014) conducted a meta - analysis of 74 studies that examined the demand - withdraw pattern and
relational outcomes.
Destructive conflict communication was negatively associated with communication satisfaction, which in turn, was associated with negative
relational outcomes.
Identity concerns following a severe relational transgression: The role of discovery method for
the relational outcomes of infidelity.
Another possibility is that individuals in casual relationships are focused on the physical act as opposed to
relational outcomes, and so they do not share intimate feelings as a way to develop the relationship further.
Findings suggested that higher actor individual SDD was generally associated with negative
relational outcomes, including lower reported relationship satisfaction, stability, and more reported couple conflict.
Relational partners vary in the ways they tend to enact conflict, and researchers have concluded that the conflict strategies people utilize can be helpful or deleterious to personal and
relational outcomes (Canary & Cupach, 1988; Gottman, 1994).
However, the results of the present study suggest that the association between perceptions of (in) equity (here, with respect to doing the «work» of relationship maintenance) and positive
relational outcomes is different for men than for women in heterosexual unions.
Although no association was found between perceptions of the work of relationship initiation and
these relational outcomes, a significant association was found between perceptions of the work of relationship maintenance and these relational outcomes.
Future work should employ dyadic methods to examine both partners» communications tactics and
relational outcomes in pursuit of a more in - depth, comprehensive understanding of the topic at hand.
However, studies linking employees» ability to detach from work to
relational outcomes is limited or even non-existing (e.g., no reference to relational outcomes in the meta - analysis of Sonnentag and Fritz, 2015).
However, the influence of detachment on
relational outcomes remains unknown (e.g., no reference to relational outcomes such as marital satisfaction in the meta - analysis of Sonnentag and Fritz, 2015).
We aim to add to the understanding of consequences of psychological detachment by focusing on marital satisfaction (i.e.,
relational outcome).
