As
this relative polar warming increased during February, the NASA maps show that colder than normal temperatures expanded over North America through Canada and parts of the Northern U.S. even as a cold spell began to blossom in Europe.

The team's data show that during the
polar night, indoor heating can bleed into the environment,
warming it by as much as 10 degrees Celsius
relative to nearby rural sites.
For example, they predicted the expansion of the Hadley cells, the poleward movement of storm tracks, the rising of the tropopause, the rising of the effective radiating altitude, the circulation of aerosols in the atmosphere, the modelling of the transmission of radiation through the atmosphere, the clear sky super greenhouse effect that results from increased water vapor in the tropics, the near constancy of
relative humidity, and
polar amplification, the cooling of the stratosphere while the troposphere
warmed.
Polar amplication is of global concern due to the potential effects of future
warming on ice sheet stability and, therefore, global sea level (see Sections 5.6.1, 5.8.1 and Chapter 13) and carbon cycle feedbacks such as those linked with permafrost melting (see Chapter 6)... The magnitude of
polar amplification depends on the
relative strength and duration of different climate feedbacks, which determine the transient and equilibrium response to external forcings.
The increase in
relative humidity is due to
warmer surface sea temperatures allowing greater evaporation and
warmer polar conditions causing less condensation.
With
polar regions excluded, 2017 becomes the third
warmest year, and the «global»
warming relative to the base period is reduced by almost a tenth of a degree Celsius.
