«Neurons outside of the central nervous system have many functions, from
relaying sensory information to controlling organ function, but some of these peripheral neural circuits are not yet well understood,» says Ben Deverman, senior research scientist and director of the Beckman Institute's CLOVER Center.
«During the development from childhood to adolescence, the spontaneous activity of cortical regions involved in basic sensory perception decouples from the activity of subcortical structures
relaying sensory information from the sensory organs to the cortex,» explains Keysers.
Then in the 1990s, scientists tracked down the spindle's source: the thalamus, a brain region that regulates sleep and also processes and
relays sensory information to the cerebral cortex.
The spinal cord contains a variety of neurons called interneurons or «middlemen» that process and
relay sensory information from the body including the skin.
Dr. Ruta, Rockefeller University, shows in her latest paper featured in Cell that the mushroom body, a pair of structures in insect brains, acts as a «switchboard» to
relay sensory information to different neuronal networks based on the fruit fly's previous experience and context.
Published in Neuron, scientists led by Gladstone associate investigator Anatol Kreitzer, PhD, discovered that dopamine depletion causes a miscommunication between the BG and another region called the thalamus, an area thought to
relay sensory information to the brain.
Not exact matches
The thalamus normally acts as a filter, winnowing out extraneous
sensory information before
relaying data to the cerebral cortex, the seat of memory, attention, language, and consciousness.
The photo illustrates a delicate branching process that is collecting
sensory information and
relaying it to the brain.
Scientists have long theorized that pain signals are sent from
sensory neurons in the limbs and other extremities to transmission neurons in the spinal cord, which then
relay the
information to the brain.
Sensory interneurons, a class of neurons in the spinal cord, are responsible for
relaying information from throughout the body to the central nervous system, which enables the sense of touch.
With similar precision, Professor Bargmann has also identified many of the intracellular signalling pathways in C. elegans that
relay information from cell surface odorant receptors (G protein - coupled receptors) to the interior of each
sensory neuron.
This
sensory information comes from tiny sensors which
relay information about joint position, tension and stretch in the muscles.
