Boulder, Colo., USA: Cretaceous
climate warming led to a significant methane
release from the seafloor, indicating potential for similar destabilization of gas hydrates
under modern global
warming.
The team also have a separate project, called
Climate feedbacks from wetlands and permafrost thaw in a
warming world (CLIFFTOP), which aims to quantity the amount of methane likely to be
released from thawing permafrost methane emissions
under 1.5 C and 2C scenarios.
If permafrost soils thaw
under climate warming they will
release carbon dioxide and methane to the atmosphere.
In the recently
released Fourth Assessment Report, the Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change, a group of 1,300 independent scientific experts from countries all over the world
under the auspices of the United Nations, concluded with more than 90 percent probability that human activities over the past 250 years have
warmed our planet.

As high latitudes
warm under climate change, they are likely to
release more methane, which will in turn boost
warming, in what is known as a positive feedback.
