Also, every airline
releases award seats at different times, so it is a little tough to predict when the best time is to search for availability.
Consider the fact that you might need to book tickets almost a year in advance depending on when your chosen airline
releases its award seats.
These days, Air Tahiti Nui generally
releases award seats 330 days in advance of departure.
Lufthansa generally only
releases award seats to partners within a week or so of departure, so you can book business class and change to first - class if availability opens up.
However, they do regularly
release awards seats closer to travel as well.
Between the U.S. and Europe, British Airways is fairly generous about
releasing award seats.
Cathay Pacific is known to
release award seats few days before the travel date.
Actual planning for this started at the beginning of this month since I knew Lufthansa did not
release any award seats until 14 days out.
Then, airline credit card users should keep checking back as the flight's departure nears to see if a regular seat opens up, as airline
release award seats from inventory closer to the flight's departure.
The real highlight is that JAL is very good about
releasing award seats in these cabins (unlike many airlines), when seats first open and also when it's close to departure, even for multiple seats together.

Airlines and hotels will use algorithms to determine when it's most advantageous for them to
release these
seats and rooms to
award travelers.
Air Canada
releases most
award seats the day they open, so it can be easy to get availability on tricky flights, especially for groups
If you're looking last - minute, this can be a boon, as Air Canada
releases most of its ClassicFlight
award seats when ticketing first opens 355 days in advance.
If the airline thinks it can sell those
seats for cash, it's much less likely to
release the
seats for cheap mileage redemptions — making
award space extremely limited on the most popular travel dates.
American Airlines is particularly well known for
releasing so few
award seats on its own planes, so you're likely stuck with BA if you want to go to Europe.
Most airlines just
release 1 to 2 premium cabin
seats per route so even if you're incredibly aggressive with searching for
award seats, you may never have a chance.
The initial
award cost isn't surprising given that it's the first flight with a new product, but we hope Delta will start to
release some saver level
award seats to make redeeming SkyMiles worth it.
Airlines balance a multitude of different factors when deciding how many
award seats to
release at the low level (saver) and higher levels.
Simply put, if you want to experience this product, there is no other way to get this
award ticket, other than transferring your points to Singapore — because Singapore doesn't
release its first class
award seats to its partners.
Although some carriers don't
release a lot of business or first class
award space in advance, they usually
release at least a few
seats.
Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer members have access to premium cabin
awards (such as first and Suites class
seats) not
released to other partner airlines.
American Airlines is very bad at
releasing Saver
Award seats so it's dangerous to assume that you'll be able to find an economical use for the miles with any great ease.
Unfortunately, British Airways
releases the majority of
award space to Europe, and American is still in the process of installing lie - flat
seats in its business class cabins.
Singapore Airlines is a semi-exclusive program and doesn't
release too many
award seats to non-Singapore members, including the other Star Alliance carriers.
South African Airways flies from New York and Washington Dulles; there are few
award flights, but it's not impossible to find one (they begin
releasing more
award seats closer to departure).
The program is notorious for
releasing few low - level
awards, so it's best to book those
seats as far in advance as possible.
Over the past few years American Airlines has been getting more and more stingy with the
award seats it
releases.
British Airways guarantees that it will
release at least 2 Business Class
seats on every flight so, as this route has just be loaded in the past few hours,
award availability should be plentiful right now....
Airlines
release a limited number of
award seats per flight, so if you have a large family and all want to travel together, it may not be possible to find enough
award availability.
As things stand it doesn't look like American Airlines have loaded their
awards seats for the Los Angeles — Auckland route — either that or they have absolutely no intention of
releasing MilesSAAver
seats at all.
Some even call exactly at 12:01 a.m. to get the
seats they want, because airlines only
release a small number of
seats initially for
award travel on each flight.
I set alerts (using ExpertFlyer.com) for London — Aruba Business Class
awards and, between November and January American Airlines didn't
release a single
seat.
IdeaWorks» recently
released 6th annual survey of
award availability revealed that Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airways offered abundant
award seats compared to rivals.
A lot of airlines
release more
award seats closer to the day of the flight, but you can't count on it.
And if there are no
seats available, you can have your request «waitlisted», which should give you priority access to any
award seats released at a later point in time.
Typically Cathay Pacific, for example,
releases only ONE First Class
award seat per flight until a few days before the flight.
The airline
releases more business class
award seats at the saver redemption level than economy
seats.
Finnair
releases very few
award seats.
Airlines keep a tight control over how many
award seats they
release — usually less than 10 percent of their inventory in a year.
And that's any ticket for sale, not just the ones airlines deign to
release for
award seats.
They regularly
release one first class
award seat on their Airbus 380 flights between Singapore and Sydney / Melbourne.
Airlines and hotels will use algorithms to determine when it's most advantageous for them to
release these
seats and rooms to
award travelers.
Availability: Typically Singapore only
releases 1 suites class
award seat in advance, although occasionally you'll see 2
award seats available close to the date of departure.
Sometimes, when you try to change one direction of a round trip, you have to
release your
seat on the direction you aren't changing, which incurs risk that said
seat /
award availability may in fact either get scooped up or not go back into inventory in time for you to scoop it back up.
My guess is VA wants to see whether they can sell those
seats rather than
release award space at this time.
