Making
religious holidays into school or federal
holidays in never
going to work because some religions and some people will always be excluded.
It just seems that if you are
going to include several Christian
holidays it would be unfair to exclude other
religious others (within reason).
But we now have
gone to «winter break» and «spring break», because people felt that giving children time off from school for
religious holidays was pretty darn close to violating the sacred seperation of church and state.
If we celebrate all religions equally fine, but we are not
going to celebrate
holidays of a group of people who hate american life and ignore other
religious groups who we coexist with peacefully!
If you want specific
religious holiday's off then I suggest you
go to a
religious run school.
When I was
going to school (back in the stone age) teachers were asked to be aware of
religious holiday and not schedule tests or teaching of important new concepts.
As an atheist I would of course welcome a «freedom from religion»
holiday but I am willing to fore
go that as long as the
religious peddlers do the same.
