As long as each side holds their own ethnic, cultural, and
religious identity above all else, there will be
conflict.
One reason for this debate is that some of the most violent and seemingly intractable contemporary
conflicts (Northern Ireland, the Middle East, Bosnia, Sri Lanka) have taken place across lines of
religious difference and have often been fed, in more or less direct ways, by appeals to
religious warrant or
identity.
The new
religious identities and communities which emerged from these
conflicts — Lutheran, Calvinist, Anglican, and the more radical groupings often lumped together under the name «Anabaptist» — did indeed share some beliefs and attitudes in common.
However, in basic respects it is true to observe that in the
conflicting messages that Christian converts receive about their
religious identity - how are they to reconcile themselves to being socially Hindu when they have adopted Christianity?
Tom Gjelten covers issues of religion, faith, and belief for NPR News, a beat that encompasses such areas as the changing
religious landscape in America, the formation of personal
identity, the role of religion in politics, and social and cultural
conflict arising from
religious differences.

Conflict: Sexual Orientation, Gender
Identity and
Religious Liberty» at the American Constitution Society National Convention in Washington, D.C. (see page 4 of this PDF file).
