It's convoluted, to say the least, but Johnson,
working with editor Bob Ducsay, gives the rush of these jumps in time a
remarkable, lively flow that at once helps form the backbone of the narrative and exude the confusion felt
by both Joes.
Most of the features that make Lewis» directorial
work such a
remarkable exception to the dominance of a realist aesthetic in Hollywood filmmaking are brilliantly apparent in The Errand Boy, including the foregrounding of sound manipulation (most blatant in the sequence involving the post-synchronisation of the song «Lover» for a musical film, and in the tape manipulation of Kathleen Freeman's reaction to having been left
by her driver in the back seat of a convertible receiving a car wash) and the placement of actors in a shot so as to highlight the presence of the camera (as when Morty, an undirected and oblivious extra in a film - within - the - film cocktail - party scene, keeps looking at the camera from the background of a shot in which other extras, in their roles as party guests, intermittently block him from the camera).
And it's a

work, doing away with the giant cat creatures and courier - witches and flying pigs and moving castles that have defined his
work.

The director himself, who co-wrote the screenplay with Rodo Sayagues (and an uncredited polish
by Diablo Cody), directs with a self - assurance that is all the more
remarkable when one considers that his most prominent
work before this — and the one that got him noticed
by Raimi — was a five - minute short, reportedly made for $ 300, in which giant robots destroy his native city of Montevideo, Uruguay.
Last but absolutely not least is Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides (1999), her
remarkable feature film debut that was one of the best releases of its year and not only does it hold up, but it has been given a top grade reissue
by Criterion and Paramount (I'm still celebrating the studio finally
working with Criterion on a regular basis) in a Blu - ray edition as strong as when I first saw the film theatrically.

I love the idea that these
remarkable and lasting
works of art were done
by unschooled young artists who were basically inventing the art of painting — just as the caves were the first art galleries!
