remind of our human condition.

of this strictly «pagan» materialism and naturalism it becomes a pressing duty to
remind ourselves once again that, if the laws
of biogenesis
of their nature suppose and effectively bring about an economic improvement in
human living -
conditions, it is not any question
of well - being, it is solely a thirst for greater being that by psychological necessity can save the thinking world from the taedium vitae.
We need to be
reminded that it was once taken for granted that authentic education was built upon the teaching and practice
of the
human and theological virtues, that education, as St Thomas Aquinas put it, is «the progression
of the child to the
condition of properly
human excellence, ie to the state
of virtue».
Fourthly, as Reinhold Niebuhr has
reminded us, through all the ironies and strange turnings
of the
human spirit there persists the ineradicable dialectical
condition wherein every advance makes possible greater destructiveness, and every gain brings new opportunities and larger temptations.
At other times, I waxed philosophical and
reminded myself that journalism and science were really just different ways
of trying to understand the
human condition, two methods
of inquiry at the opposite ends
of a spectrum.
But along with these and other scientifically significant missions, DSCOVR will also have the ability to inspire new ways
