In spite of overwhelming evidence and bipartisan agreement on the important role teachers play in shaping children's lives, recent policy initiatives have only served to heap scorn on teachers while concurrently cutting positions, freezing salaries, and
removing classroom support.

classroom by recruiting, training, retaining, and rewarding teachers and school leaders; creating career ladders and increasing pay for effective teachers who serve as mentors, teach in high - need subjects, such as math and science, and who excel in the

Reaching this goal will take a collaborative effort of families, schools, and community partners working to improve
classroom literacy instruction, provide appropriate reading interventions and
support services, and expand opportunities and
remove barriers to learning that exist outside of school.
