I hope that they create a unique structure and offer unique client experiences which can not be
replicated at other firms.

Well, I guess there's no easy answer except to say that, whilst still keeping on top of our primary research, we somehow need to amass
other, possibly unrelated, results that are a)
firm enough not to vanish into the ether
at the third
replicate and b) novel enough to warrant your favourite funding body throwing a quarter of a million
at it.
It's hard to get this from the financial statements, but I think that a conservative, ownership mentality exists
at Markel that can't really be
replicated easily
at other firms.
So, if you're thinking about starting your own legal practice — solo or with a few
others — don't
replicate what you learned
at a big
firm, or worse, what you learned in law school.
