The government would be better off focusing
on teacher retention rather than
recruitment, according to two new
reports
But as a recent education select committee
report on recruitment and retention of
teachers recognises, the government shouldn't underestimate the impact of high - quality continued professional development.
It advised the government to draw up a clear plan for
teacher supply covering the next three years, detailing how targets will be met and based
on better data; to set out how it will talk to school leaders about the
recruitment challenges they face; to
report back
on the extent of
teachers taking lessons in which they are not qualified; and to ensure there is clearer information
on where applicants may train to become a
teacher and how much it costs.
Carter laid out his plans at the Whole Education's 7th annual conference in London
on Friday 27 January, and believes it would help tackle a «desperate
teacher recruitment and retention problem», Tes has
reported.

report warns the government that action must be taken
on teachers» pay to help reverse the crisis in
teacher recruitment and retention.
Such strategies include
teacher and principal residency programs; differentiated pay plans; human capital data
reports; and targeted
recruitment efforts using sophisticated web - based systems and focusing
on the challenge of recruiting and retaining diverse
teachers.
For example, the IDOE provides a web - based
recruitment portal to provide streamlined sharing of

report by the Center
on Enhancing Early Learning Outcomes which reviews published research
on early childhood (ECE) workforce education and credentials as well as
on the current status of ECE wages,
recruitment and retention challenges, and promising practices.
In February, Schools Week
reported on the findings of the education select committee's
teacher recruitment and retention inquiry, which called
on the government to give all
teachers the chance to formally improve their professional development as one way to boost retention rates.
