He said Colombian health authorities would have to address questions about the timing of
their reporting Zika - positive cases of microcephaly to WHO.
The rare autoimmune disease can lead to paralysis, and recently it appears to be occurring more frequently than usual within at least eight countries and territories
reporting Zika outbreaks.
Menabde said currently 34 countries had
reported the Zika virus outbreak, mostly in the Americas and Caribbean, and seven reported an increase in cases of microcephaly.
Lauren Castro, co-lead author and PhD student at The University of Texas at Austin, said: «The CDC's recommendation to intervene following two
reported Zika cases should ensure early action everywhere, even though Zika epidemic risk can vary enormously, even within a single state.
Until recently state health officials did not require physicians and hospitals to
report Zika virus disease, so it is possible that some cases may have not been captured by state records.
As of 30 November, more than 1200 cases had been reported in 10 states, all of which have also
reported Zika virus infections, says Ana Maria Bispo de Filippis, head of the flavivirus laboratory at the Oswaldo Cruz Institute in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In their follow up modelling study
they reported Zika virus infection during the first trimester of pregnancy led to higher than expected rates of microcephaly.

The number of babies born with microcephaly in northeast Brazil, the country hardest hit by the
Zika outbreak, has increased about 40-fold from baseline levels in the last six months, according to

As we
report in a collection of stories, much remains unclear, including the relationship between
Zika infection and microcephaly and how best to combat the mosquitoes that spread the disease.
But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's decision, announced August 5, covers only a specific, preliminary test release of GM mosquitoes on Key Haven in the Florida Keys, where no locally transmitted
Zika cases have been
reported.
As of July 19, the CDC
reported 5,392 cases of
Zika in U.S. states since 2015, including 224 infections acquired locally.
Although
Zika quietly took root in northeastern Brazil in late 2013 or early 2014, many months passed before Brazilian health authorities received
reports of unexplained fever and skin rashes.
In a third study
reported in Nature, researchers from more than two dozen institutions followed a trail of genetic clues to determine when and how
Zika made its way to Florida.
«We found that in each of the regions we could analyze,
Zika virus circulated undetected for many months, up to a year or longer, before the first locally transmitted cases were
reported,» says Bronwyn MacInnis, an infectious disease geneticist at the Broad Institute, in Cambridge, Mass. «This means the outbreak in these regions was under way much earlier than previously thought.»
More recently, coinfections of
Zika and dengue viruses,
Zika and chikungunya, and all three viruses have been
reported during various outbreaks, including the recent outbreak of
Zika virus in North and South America.
In 2016, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended that public health officials trigger epidemic intervention when two non-familial locally - acquired cases of
Zika are
reported in an area.

The paper
reports that 306 of the affected babies were tested for
Zika virus infection with the ultrasensitive polymerase chain reaction that detects viral RNA or immune markers.
A far higher number of babies in Colombia have developed microcephaly related to
Zika virus infections than previously
reported.
The two
reports also showed that
Zika virus infected and damaged neuronal stem cells harvested from mice and humans.
But that outbreak also complicates the picture for the Guillain — Barré /
Zika link: There did not appear to be a surge in cases of Guillain — Barré — or at least none that made it into official
reports.
(WHO
reports the numbers given to them by countries, and each country sets its own standard for what qualifies as a case that is «suggestive of» or «potentially associated with»
Zika infection.)
Other sources have indicated that there were no
Zika cases
reported during the Rio Olympics.
In contrast, the latest World Health Organization (WHO) «situation
report,» with data current to 7 December, said that Colombia had only
reported 60 cases of microcephaly or central nervous system malformations potentially linked to
Zika.
Now, it is being deployed to monitor the
Zika as it spreads beyond Brazil, where
reports last August of fetal deaths and newborns with brain disorders including microcephaly, a devastating condition that results in abnormally small brains and heads, began to trickle in.
