Congress passed the FDCPA after hearing
reports of debt collectors calling late at night or early in the morning and making threats against consumers.

A federal appeals court has affirmed four lower court judgments that
debt collector Portfolio Recovery Associates violated federal law by failing to
report to credit bureaus when consumers disputed the amount
of debt they supposedly owed.
Some companies may not explain the risks associated with their programs, including that many (or most)
of their clients drop out without settling their
debts, that their clients» credit
reports may suffer, or that
debt collectors may continue to call them.
For the first time in history, this means that the Federal government will be able to regulate the actions
of independent payday lenders, private mortgage lenders and servicers,
debt collectors, credit
reporting agencies, and private student loan companies.

These agencies access
reports from all three credit bureaus because each one receives information from its own set
of debt collectors, lenders and credit card companies.

of paper they give you as «proof» you returned your cable boxes when the
debt collector comes a calling and puts a $ 800 collection on your credit
report (for est. 2 - 3 cable boxes) saying you never returned the cable boxes and you tell them you did they say;

collectors, and that is when it goes on your
report.

A recent
report has discovered that nearly two - thirds
of the people who complain to federal regulators about medical
debt collectors do not owe medical
debt at all.

debt collectors seeking to collect on medical bills claimed to be owed to hospitals and other medical providers.
«Collection accounts stay on a credit
report for seven years from the date
of first delinquency, not seven years from when one particular
collector got their hands on it, which is a common misconception,» said Bill Druliner, a GreenPath

reports that bank garnishment allows
debt collectors to withdraw money from your accounts to satisfy a judgment, unless certain funds in your accounts, such as Social Security payments, are exempt from judgments by law.

reporting that new Federal Trade Commission (FTC) proposals addressing
debt collectors attempting to collect on
debts of deceased borrowers may backfire by allowing
debt collection agencies to pursue surviving relatives and associates
of deceased debtors.
