Rescue organizations often do not have the funds to
rescue mill dogs because of the expense involved.

But sadly, each year
rescue groups take in many of these charming little
dogs — some
because they have been overbred in puppy
mills, some
because owners failed to do their homework or made an impulse purchase.
We have a specific intake person who only interacts with family surrender people
because they require more time and need to have their hands held through the process more than a shelter transfer, or a
dog coming from another
rescue person or puppy
mill.

NMDR has
rescued more than 7,700
dogs from puppy
mills over the past 6 years, and
because they rely solely on donations / grants, they can only
rescue as many
dogs as their funding will allow.
Steve Kornell referred to his two
rescue dogs, Harvey and Hedwig, saying that puppy
mills should take note: «You might want to wake up and come into the 21st Century
because we're not going backward.»
Many of the
mill dogs we
rescue are about to be euthanized
because they are no longer considered «profitable» by the puppy
mill — a 7 - month old puppy is too old to sell at a pet store; a 9 - year old female is no longer producing large enough litters; or there are health issues that would cost money to treat.
Some of this is
because, mostly women, see these poor creatures in the windows of pet stores (puppy
mill bred
dogs) and they
rescue them.
Of course, you can think you know everything there is to know about
dogs and how they think and feel, just
because you grew up with them — and then end up adopting a breed new to you or an abused
rescue or puppy
mill dog... even a senior
dog when you've never had one before!
And
because of that they joined the NMDR
rescue team to save more puppy
mill dogs.
They find homes for
dogs that can no longer remain with their families
because of illness, devorce, relocation or other disruptions; adopt purebred
dogs from animal shelters and find them new homes and
rescue dogs from puppy
mills and other cruel and neglectful situations.
He now owns two
rescue dogs, including Precious, who,
because of a puppy -
mill - related defect, has jaw problems causing her tongue to always stick out.
During their investigations, CAPS
rescued numerous
dogs from these
mills,
because breeders no longer viewed them as profitable.
Some critics of
rescue buying of breeding stock at auction argue that the entire practice of selling breeding stock to
rescues is a fraud,
because puppy
mills can just hold some puppies back when they want more breeding stock, so they have no need to buy breeder
dogs at auction.
Because you decided to
rescue a
dog, instead of fueling the puppy
mill industry by buying a
dog, one lucky
dog will now shower you with unconditional love every single day.
Because there is demand from both breeders and
rescues, the puppy
mills are now BREEDING EVEN MORE
dogs to meet demand from BOTH groups.
This is interesting
because many of the puppy
millers in ohio are selling their
dogs to
rescues.
