A few years ago, while I was talking with principals in Connecticut about
research on school culture — the «secret sauce» of school improvement — one principal posed a question that revealed why many educators dislike, or at least disregard, research: Where should leaders start in trying to improve a school culture?

Many of these models are based
on new findings in brain
research and cognitive development, and they embrace a variety of approaches: using the arts as a learning tool (for example, musical notes to teach fractions); incorporating arts into other core classes (writing and performing a play about, say, slavery); creating a
school environment rich in arts and
culture (Mozart in the hallways every day) and hands -
on arts instruction.
In her synthesis of
research on effective teacher professional development that has demonstrated a positive impact
on student outcomes, Timperley (2008) identified 10 key principles, including: providing teachers with opportunities to drive their own professional development, allowing teachers to work collaboratively to learn and apply evidence based practices, establishing a professional learning
culture that provides a safe and authentic environment for professional enquiry and ensuring
school leaders take an active role in developing professional learning, and maintaining momentum within
schools.
An effective learning
culture in a
school has a number of key features, including: engaging teachers in collaboration, using data to inform decision making and learning activities, conducting professional learning that is based
on current
research and identifying the impact of professional learning
on staff and student outcomes from the outset (AITSL, 2013b).
According to Becky Smerdon and Kathryn Borman, who led the Gates - sponsored
research team that evaluated the initiative, by the late 1990s some consensus had emerged among reformers about what made
schools successful: «a shared vision focused
on student learning, common strategies for engendering that learning, a
culture of professional collaboration and collective responsibility, high - quality curriculum, systematic monitoring of student learning, strong instructional leadership (usually from the principal), and adequate resources.»
McCarthy knew he had a small window of time to transform the
school's
culture and, after doing some
research, he decided
on the first step toward building the trust and teamwork he would need to succeed.
«Clearly, there is a great need for rigorous evaluation
research, which should focus both
on the impact of
school discipline reforms and
on their potential unintended consequences,» the authors note, emphasizing that reducing suspensions is a starting point in effective
school discipline reform but that changing
school culture can have «spillover» effects
on teachers and peers which raise important questions for further study.
Early
