The special task force consists of experts in
animal welfare, veterinarians and industry representatives, which bring their expertise,
research and perspectives to assist MAPAQ in updating the Province's
animal welfare
regulations.
The analysis examines impacts of a rule that amends the
Animal Welfare
regulations to prohibit, with certain exceptions, the importation of dogs for purposes of resale,
research, or veterinary treatment, unless they are in good health, have all necessary vaccinations, and are 6 months of age or older.
Any such dog that is imported for purposes of resale,
research, or veterinary treatment, even if labeled «wild
animal,» will be subject to the
regulations.
A new National
Research Council report, commissioned by the Center for Veterinary Medicine of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), concluded that current
regulations addressing
animal dietary supplements are in «disarray.»
The department of agriculture would issue
regulations to implement these standards which could vary depending on whether the facility is a licensee such as a
research facility, a permittee like a commercial breeder or registrant such as an
animal shelter.
The expertise,
research and perspectives contributed by task force participants have guided MAPAQ in updating the Province's
animal welfare
regulations.
Our purpose is to: Help raise public awareness of humane treatment of companion
animals; Assist other rescue organizations place their
animals; Provide pet owner education which will result in more successful permanent homes;
Research and promote legislation to enhance
animal welfare and control
regulations; and Find adoptive homes for individual
animals.
The records that had been available were frequently used by
animal welfare advocates to monitor government
regulation of
animal treatment at circuses,
research laboratories, zoos and puppy mills.
The searchable database allowed anyone to check government
regulation of how
animals are treated at about 9,000 zoos, circuses,
research laboratories, dog breeding operations and other facilities.
Requiring education for all those involved with
research animals to include courses in ethology, ethics, manipulative procedures and current laws,
regulations, guidelines and codes of practice regarding laboratory
animal care.
