resident dog alone together till you are sure they will get along with out any fighting.

resident dog is ok if the new one is being real rude (jumping up on it, not leaving it
alone etc) but you have to control the situation, you have to let the
resident dog know you will be the one to discipline the new one.

They may or may not become the best of friends, the new
dog may or may not be affected by the
resident dog's separation anxiety, and at the end of the day, even if it works in theory, there are still those times where the new
dog may have to be separated from the
resident dog which means the underlying behavior problem of
alone - time anxiety will still be there in full force.
Consider doing separation anxiety training with the
resident dog to help them be more comfortable with
alone time first, before bringing in a second
dog.
In a Johns Hopkins Depression & Anxiety Bulletin, Karen Swartz, MD, mentions a recent study that found that nursing home
residents in St. Louis felt less lonely when they spent quiet time with a
dog alone than when they visited with a
dog and other
residents.
In homes where all
resident adults are in full time employment or where the
dog is regularly left «home
alone» for long periods.
It's not fair when a foster guest takes over from your
resident pet, so I would have to play games with both
dogs and Brodie and I would also have separate
alone time.

alone and have a
resident dog, please make sure to bring a trusted friend or family member to wait with your
resident dog while you go on a tour, as owned pets are not permitted on tours.
