Incinerated municipal
solids and other
waste streams results in a significant amount
of ash
residue, which often contains valuable metals.
Although new technologies have already been developed for the recovery
of dissolved inorganic phosphates in the liquid fractions
of municipal and agricultural
wastes,
solid residues remain a largely untapped source for phosphorus in its organic form.
An additional 120 EJ / yr
of bioenergy from
waste products (including crop
residues, pulp and paper mills, and municipal
solid waste) and 8 EJ / yr
of traditional bioenergy are consumed in the RCP4.5.
The Commission notes, however, that biodiesel is generally «compatible with existing distribution infrastructure» and outlines the potential
of a newer process («thermal depolymerization») that produces renewable diesel without the above disadvantages, from «animal offal, agricultural
residues, municipal
solid waste, sewage, and old tires».
