«What we are seeing here is that Müller
glia are important players in
retinal health,» Eroglu said.
«Overlooked cell key player in preventing age - related vision loss: Tree - shaped
retinal cells called Müller
glia may provide a new therapeutic target for treating degenerative eye diseases.»
«Regenerative potential of cells in mouse retina: Researchers use a clue from zebrafish to discover the cues that reprogram Müller
glia into
retinal neurons.»
Sometimes referred to as the stem cells of the zebrafish eye, Müller
glia are the cells from which all other types of
retinal cells are regenerated in the fish.
Molecular markers for
retinal ganglion, amacrine, bipolar, horizontal, Müller
glia, and rod and cone photoreceptor cells (Table S3) identified these cell types (Figures 5B, 5D — 5N, and S2, S3, S4, S5, S6).
So far, two major endogenous cell sources for neuronal regeneration have been described: the Müller
glia (MG) and
retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells.
Müller
glia are activated in almost all types of
retinal disease, also called gliosis.
Towards our goals we study
retinal cells throughout their life, from embryonic stem cells to
retinal progenitors to differentiating and mature neurons and
glia — with one eye on neuronal regeneration (meaning de-novo neurogenesis) in the mammalian retina — and with another eye on
retinal disease pathomechanisms.
Finally, the CFC has discovered a unique population of
glia in proximity to
retinal ganglion cell axons as they exit the retina.
Together these studies show that the responses of both
retinal ganglion cells and surrounding
glia are involved in the pathogenesis of glaucoma.
