GRENOBLE, France, Jan. 22 (UPI)-- Glaciers in South America's Andes have been
retreating at an increasing rate, which could affect the region's water supply in the near future, scientists say.

«When we modeled future shoreline change with the
increased rates of sea level rise (SLR) projected under the IPCC's «business as usual» scenario, we found that
increased SLR causes an average 16 - 20 feet of additional shoreline
retreat by 2050, and an average of nearly 60 feet of additional
retreat by 2100,» said Tiffany Anderson, lead author and post-doctoral researcher
at the UH Mānoa School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology.
They pay interest twice a year,
at a fixed
rate, and they
increase in value when inflation is on the rise, and decrease when inflation
retreats.

rate, the thinning of ice and
retreat of glacial extent has taken place simultaneously

increasing regional and local temperatures.
Along Alaska's northwestern coast,
increased coastal erosion is causing some shorelines to
retreat at rates averaging tens of feet per year.
The ice sheet loses most of its mass on the perimeter, through a dozen relatively fast - moving glaciers that have recently become thinner, significantly
increased their
rates of
retreat, and broken up
at the ocean end (the terminus).
The
increases in temperature is causing the
retreat of the glaciers to
increase at a
rate that is effecting the streamflow and runoff in the area.
The
retreat has been most noticeable
at high elevations, driven in large part by warming temperatures contributing directly to melting and indirectly to more precipitation falling as rain rather than snow, in turn
increasing the
rate at which the glaciers move and
increasing the size of glacial lakes, both decreasing ice cover.
