retro game references and inspirations come from a laundry list of classic games.
You control a colon (hehe) in a 2D platformer (including a level with a mine cart section, a level with
retro game references and a secret level with meme references) collecting letters of the alphabet while learning about typography (well, the learning part is optional, I haven't gone back to read anything after I unlocked it).

This is my
game of the year I absolutely loved it... It gives great props in the form of chozo statues from Metroid to get your power - ups and gives suttle
references to a lot of other
retro games.
But frankly, zombies and
retro graphics have been done to death, and there is a surprising variety of indie
games that
reference memes.

Retro City Rampage features a long and robust campaign mode that continuously hammers your memories with
references from the 80s and 90s.
Earlier this year I reviewed
Retro City Rampage, and honestly I could copy and paste certain parts of that
game's review and just put it back in here because Evoland 2 is just endlessly concerned with
references, and is really trying to make this part of its thing.
Between the
retro graphics and a chiptune soundtrack by Anamanaguchi, the
game is just one big love letter to both that era of gaming and fans of the source material, with tonnes of details and
references to Scott's adventures and world scattered throughout the levels.
Everything else is a series of parodies and
references to a number of
retro game franchises — such as Metal Gear, Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda and many more — as well as TV shows and movies from the»80s and»90s.
Edit: This is just a cool
retro take on GTA with a crap load of sweet
references and in - jokes for all us geeks who actually played those
referenced games back then in those «good old days».
Younger
gamers may not necessarily understand these
references, but this just gives
Retro City Rampage the opportunity to provide a little education to them.
You might be tempted to skip all the dialog (as I did at first) but to appreciate all the hard work that went into this
game you should just read along and enjoy because
Retro City Rampage doesn't stop at video
game references, oh no, it dives into pop culture of the 1980s from movies to music.
