But the film is
intended on every level as a commentary and analysis of these tropes, with Dano
revealed as a frustrated, selfish manchild who wants a type, not a person, and Kazan (who wrote the script) repeatedly trying to stretch beyond that type and assert herself, with disastrous
results.
