As the team describes online in Nature today, it used a novel technique called x-ray
reverberation mapping to analyze slight delays in the arrival time of x-rays from the event, allowing them to map out the inside edge of the accretion disk.
For this reason, Joner and masters student Carla Carroll, who is also a co-author of the study, used a method known as
reverberation mapping.
Scientists can also do
reverberation mapping, which uses X-ray telescopes to look for time differences between emissions from various locations near the black hole to understand the orbits of gas and photons around the black hole.
